When I originally decided to migrate to a Hi-Bandwidth connection I was living in Richmond, BC (suburb of Vancouver) and the options were either cable (ROGERS@home) or ADSL (Telus). As I researched which would be better I had decided on cable being as it had a theoretically higher bandwidth throughout (approximately 2Gb/s* + as opposed to approximately 1.5Gb/s with ADSL) and a fairly static IP address (four months I was with them it never changed). Some people like static others like dynamic. I am in the former.

Unfortunately Rogers never did quite deliver on this maximum and it seemed that they were putting caps on upload speeds, which makes sending large attachments via e-mail somewhat slow. Also they have to have what I consider the worst technical support I have ever seen in my life. I was one of the lucky ones as I had very few outages in service but from what I have researched I am in a minority in this department. Just blind luck I'm assuming.

About 7 months later I moved to Delta, BC (another suburb of Vancouver) and wished to have a Hi-Bandwidth connection once again. My options were once again cable and ADSL. I was unable to get ADSL as they did not have enough ports for me to get a connection, so I went with cable once again. The big difference is that cable internet in Delta is provided by a independent cable company by the name of Delta Cable (http://www.dccnet.com/) and I am very pleased that I decided to go with this independent company. They are slightly more expensive than ADSL and Rogers but they are worth every penny of it... I consistently have high data transfers sometimes in the area of 2Gb/s . The reason for this is that my connection is metered much like your water or your electricity. So I never have a problem with people hogging bandwidth as it gets very cost prohibitive if you go over your 4Gb download and 1Gb upload per month which is fine with me. Their technical support is superb, usually answered by the second ring. Also, all of Delta Cable's network is Internet ready. I was told if I was in Delta I could get Internet unlike ROGERS@Home where you would have to check on their Web page. In the nine months I have lived here in Delta I have never had an outage EVER.

*The speed of 2 Gb/s is how the story originally appeared, but we're sure it was a typo and he meant to say 2 Mb/s.
